Bigosaur are a small Serbian development company that have been around since 2013. We caught up with lead programmer Milan Babuskov to talk about their newest production MMiaW. A game in similar style to the 2008 Castle Crashers game, but which offers the player a lot more longevity.
My Mom is a Witch (MMiaW) is not your typical dungeon crawler game, it features 3 different modes of play which focus on melee, ranged and magic combat. It has a mana system for magic, the ability to upgrade as you progress through the levels, the most imaginative boss battles, and amongst other things it runs using a unique RNG level creator which ensures that each time you press the start button, your getting a completely new experience.
The first thing you notice with MMiaW are the colourful and pixel perfect graphics. The game was designed with a 1366x768 resolution in order to achieve this, and it pays off well. As you start to play the game your joined into a top-down environment which took its original inspiration from the 2014 game Binding of Isaac.
You control 1 of 2 brothers who is on a mission to save his mother from the Kings dungeons. Its at first unclear as to why she was taken (other than being a witch), but the storyline deepens as you go further into the game. Each level consists of several chambers to explore and clear before locating the end of level boss. Whilst on your journey you will encounter various enemies which include a bunch of goblins who are looking for an item that was stolen from them. They wander round each stage looking to retrieve their artifact until finally, they locate the thief at the Kings castle. And as you can imagine, all hell breaks loose as a 3 sided battle takes place between you, the goblins, and the Kings men.
The fight battles are well thought out and allow you to cast various magic with a single press of a button. There's a wide range of weapons to buy and pick up throughout the game, and there's also a rage meter that you can build up for super attacks. It is possible to just play the game as a standard hack n slash game, though the further you get into it, the spell casting just becomes a natural part of the gameplay, as intended.
MMiaW was a fun game to play, the only downside i could see was when you lost a life, it was game over. Now this probably wouldn't be an issue when playing at home, as you have the time to master the controls. Sadly we only had 10 minutes on the game, and so i found myself back at the start many times after failing to defeat a goblin or 2. Because of this the learning curve felt like no progress was being made due to the RNG building a completely new map every time you start the game. But don't let that deter you, once that learning curve is over there are endless amounts of hours of gameplay to be had.
The team at Bigosaur have done a really nice job on MMiaW, and with only 1 lead programmer its a very satisfying achievement for them. With the game taking inspiration from several other indie productions its done a great job of expanding on what made them so popular. The main focus was on its gameplay, though they have done a wonderful job on all aspects of the game. Its not a new idea by any means, but if your into these type of games then MMiaW will definitely be a game that youl enjoy, and could quite easily become a favorite.
