Indie games are extremely common in this day and age, but the only thing they each share is imagination! We got chance to test out the new inventive creation from Prospect Games, and were extremely impressed with the results.
We came across the Prospect Games (Manchester U.K.) development team at this years Euro Gamer Expo and they were more than happy to talk about Unbox, a game where you control a cardboard box who works for a delivery company named GPS. Where that may seem bizarre enough already, we were assured the storyline gets quite deep and meaningful, though the gameplay remains fun and innovative.
As mentioned, you control a cardboard that rolls along the landscape. Part of the unique gameplay in Unbox is the way the controls emulate how you'd expect a square box to 'roll'. Straight from the start your coming to terms with the fact that pushing forward isn't as simple as you'd expect, though it does only take a couple of minutes to be comfortable and master it, and the short learning curve is quite amusing as opposed to annoying.
You soon realise that Unbox places you in a beautiful open world environment with so much to explore and discover. With a development team of only 7 people its an astonishing achievement that they should all be extremely proud of. Throughout the game you can expect to complete many missions that are based around solving puzzles, racing against the clock, and exploring fun possibilities with physics, that usually involve causing a lot of amusing mayhem.
Unbox is a very interesting idea, and one thats been executed well. There's enough to keep the player amused for a long time, and as its a game that has the ability to be expanded on then i can see it becoming a big hit once it hits the home consoles. Its currently only available on Steam, though we were told there will be a PS4 release next year. It currently retails at £11.99, so with the success of previously free PSN games like Rocket League hitting the store at £14.99 then i could easily see Unbox being a major player itself.
You can download the free demo now which has a lot of gameplay included from the link below, you will need to install the free Steam engine in order to install and play the game first. If your unfamiliar with Steam then please check it out (link also below).
We also have a t-shirt to give away next month which has been signed by the Prospect Game team and 2 other indie developers, so please keep your eyes peeled for that.
