A newly developed Sega Megadrive game is about to hit the streets, and very promising it seems. We got chance to test the Tech Demo of Big Evil Corporation's new masterpiece, Tanglewood...

Tanglewood is a realm situated on a planet with 2 suns and many moons. A land filled with deep forests and spotted lakes thats home to many types of animals. You play as Nhym, a fox like creature who has lost his way home and in desperate need to find his way back, for when nighttime falls and the forest darkens, the land of Tanglewood isn't so friendly after all. Vicious beasts lurk in the shadows, all eager to serve you up for dinner.

Taking inspiration from many all time classics Tanglewood's gameplay has been described as a mix between Another World and The Lion King. Giving us great platforming action with some light puzzle elements and a lot of added suspense. The game itself has a working night/day cycle that will spawn enemies dependent on what part of the day it is, and theres plenty of in-game extras to find and locate for all those hardcore gamers out there.
What really interested me is the fact the game is being made not only for real Sega hardware, but with actual original Sega development kits, making this a homebrew title thats definitely worth taking a look at.

I got to test out the first 4 acts of the game, and was very pleased with what i played. The controls are straight forward and responsive and the gameplay for me had a feel of Sonic the Hedgehog to it. The graphics are nicely drawn and levels are well designed giving you plenty to explore.
Each level has you locate a number of fuzzy ball like creatures and move them back to their nests. Once returned, you can use them to summon up a number of special abilities that will help you along your journey. Slight puzzle elements were present in the game which compromised of moving boulders in order to reach higher places, or weaving your way through a series of burrows in order to get to otherwise unreachable areas. Theres also an array of enemies to encounter, and those who watch the gameplay video down below will understand where the comparison between Another World comes from. It was a really fun game to play and ill be looking forward to playing more when its released.
Theres 9 Chapters in all and each compromises of between 3-4 acts, making this a decent length game. It took me an hour to complete act 1-4 on my first attempt, so you can see theres some longevity here, and with random Fireflies dotted around each level to find, it means theres some good replay value too.

The game first appeared on Kickstarter and was successfully funded by 892 backers who bought in close to £7000 over the £48,000 goal. Production is now underway and pre-orders to the public are soon to be taken.
