Today we take a look a 2 Shmups and a Gun-Runner from 3 very talented development teams, all sure to offer you some blasting satisfaction. Read on to find out if the 'Games Got Potential'....or Not?
Magical Witch Eve
MWE is a simple Shmup game created by a developer named Hexun and was made in just 5 days for the 9th AGDG game day event. It plays out as 1 continual level and is visually quite appealing and easy to get into. The music was taken from the H Mix Library and suits the atmosphere well. The gameplay is smoothe and the mechanics are simple yet effective so you can expect your usual chaotic Shmup experience here!
The only issue i had was that there needs to be some alterations done to the enemy defences, as most seem near impossible to destroy. Sadly though, as the game was created over 230 days ago it would seem no further development will be happening? The current demo is seemingly all we will ever see and thats a shame as its a game that has potential.
Its one of 2 demos created by Hexun you can check out over at itch.io. Both are very impressive visually and although it seems Hexun isnt a devoted developer, one day hes going to come out with something thats an instant success im sure. In this instance its not only the game that has potential, but the developer aswel.
Xydonia
Reaching over $5000 more than its $20,000 Kickstarter goal, Xydonia is a game that people were eager to get there hands on right from the start. Its a fast paced Shmup with a true arcade feel and a game that will keep you engrossed throughout. It featued in many top publications like NintendoLife, Gamespot and Gamers Hell and is definately a game that all retro shmup fans should take notice of.
The graphics are true arcade 16Bit style and levels are well designed with some very imaginative boss battles to suit. The controls are smooth and theres enough power ups to keep you entertained for quite some time. Development is still ongoing and the team at Breaking Bytes are working hard to make this a great shmup, new features are being added and they are keeping everybody upto date with regular blog posts over at the Xydonia Tumblr page.
Its a game thats already shown its potential so if you havent seen it already then i reccomend taking a look.
Boneborne Prologue
At first glance, Boneborne looks like it was designed by a small child. But as you start to play the game you apreciate the pixelated graphic style used, and evrythng seems very suited to the mood of the game.
Its a platform shooter developed by programmer Da Neel that although looks cute in some derranged way, its a very dark game that throws in a few suprises that will be sure to catch you out. Theres a lot of imagination gone into the levels and everything works well together to bring you a twisted psychodelic experience. Its not an easy game so expect some trial and error, though its great fun and one i hope to see expanded on into a full game. There doesnt seem to be any updates since April 2016 on the Official Boneborne Dev Log so it may be a game thats now shelved? But hopefully we will see it ressurected as i think its a title that would do very well on Steam. For ow you can download a demo of it at Gamejolt.
