In our second installment of GGP we take a look at a game from the Gun-run genre that i think many will find interesting. Also we take a look at a progressive SHMUP thats sure to make you lose a few hours. Read on to find out if the "Games Got Potential?" ... or not!
Operation Fungus PC/Linux
Developed by Jani Nykänen, Operation Fungus is a 2d SHMUP set in the year 20XX. An alien race called the Fungusians have landed on earth with a proposal of bringing eternal happiness to the land. After some skeptical humans get together Operation Fungus is born, and you are created in order to seek out the main Fungusians HQ, and see what they are really upto.
You play as a character named Lardy O'Pumpkin, and you set off with your jetpack in a 2d pixelated environment blasting Fungusians and collecting crystals! These allow you to purchase weapon upgrades which are essential in progressing through levels. Your first 15 mins playing may feel like your getting nowhere, but once you've purchased a few upgrades you'll be addicted to the game. Its a simple quick fix that leaves you wanting more, and you'll fulfill its desires by keep pressing the retry button.
The artwork in the game is pixelated and simplistic, almost child like. But, it suits the game very well, and has a nice level of humor added in which adds to the gameplay. I especially like emulated vision of an old CRT TV, its a nice touch! The soundtrack was created by Oskari "h0dari" Romo and is also well suited to the game. Operation Fungus isn't really a game were likely to see on home consoles, but for sites like Kongregate and similar its a perfect game to gain attention. Its currently free to download from GameJolt, and if you like these type of repetitive, yet addictive type games then i definitely recommend taking a look at it.
Steam Heart PC/Mac/Linux
Developed for the Ludum Dare 36th online competition, Steam Heart is a side scrolling gun-run game that plays out like 1 long level.
Set in a steam powered world that's fueled by a golden cog, you play as a character set out to stop a crazed mad monopoly man who has stolen it for the purpose of evil. You blast your way through what seems like 1 long action packed level with several bosses to encounter along the way. Everything you can expect from a gun-run game is here in Steam Heart. Weapons, Power-ups, fast paced carnage and plenty of explosions! The character designs are imaginative and everything just creates a really great playable experience.
Developed by SinclairStrange in under 72 hours the game is a great tribute to the 90s gun run games some of us grew up with. Due to the short development timeframe it can be completed in around 15 mins, but it always leaves you wanting more! Its a game you can enjoy playing over and over, but hopefully plans to evolve it into a full game will emerge in the near future? For now though, SinclairStrange is working on a sequel of a previous Ludum Dare Jam game called Ourobos. Ourobos Legacy has just been given the Steam Green Light, and if its anything like Steam Heart then you can bet you'll be seeing a review of it here!
